First-time guide to Iguazú Falls

← Back to Selvatour Travels

Visiting Iguazú Falls for the first time is unforgettable, and a little preparation makes the experience much easier. The destination includes long walks, humid weather, national parks and—if you visit both sides—an international border crossing.

Which side should you visit?

The Argentine side offers the longest visit and several walking circuits through the forest, with close views of many waterfalls. Allow most of the day. The Brazilian side is usually shorter and provides broad panoramic views of the entire system. If your schedule permits, visit one side on each day: they complement each other rather than repeat the same experience.

Best time of year

Iguazú can be visited throughout the year. Summer is hot and humid, with a greater chance of rain. Winter generally offers milder temperatures, while holiday periods and long weekends can be busier. Water volume changes with rainfall, so every season gives the Falls a different character.

What to bring

  • Comfortable, non-slip walking shoes.
  • Light clothing and a compact rain jacket or poncho.
  • Sun protection, insect repellent and drinking water.
  • A dry bag or protection for your phone and camera.
  • Your passport or valid travel documents if you cross into Brazil.
Local tip: start early, keep some flexibility for weather, and avoid planning a tight flight connection immediately after an international excursion.

Tickets and transfers

Entrance tickets are normally purchased separately from transfers. Prices, opening times and access rules may change, so check the official park information before traveling. A prearranged transfer helps coordinate pickup, waiting times and the return to your accommodation, especially when visiting the Brazilian side.

Traveling with children or reduced mobility

Tell your agency in advance about ages and mobility requirements. This helps select appropriate circuits, vehicles and rest times. The region is welcoming to families, but distances, heat and crowds should be considered when building the itinerary.

A simple first-time plan

Use one full day for the Argentine Falls, one half or full day for the Brazilian Falls and Bird Park, and keep an additional day for Puerto Iguazú, the Triple Frontier or another regional experience. Three or four nights usually provide a comfortable first visit.
